AKSCOE TOWN HALL MEETING BETWEEN THE MANAGEMENT AND THE STUDENTS
The Provost Addressing in the Town Hall Meeting between the Management and the Students
The Provost, Akwa Ibom State College of Education, Afaha Nsit, Dr. Daniel George Udo has promised to deliver free, fair and credible elections to all students, come Friday, 30th April.
Dr. Udo gave the assurance, during a town hall meeting, today, April 27th, 2021 when he met Management, Staff and Students of the College to brief them on the modalities that would safeguard a credible and transparent process to usher in a new leadership.
It could be recalled that, the Student Union Government election that was billed for last Friday, 23th April was suspended till this week Friday due to compromised by electoral body and security reasons.
He hinted that the management of the college has no interest on who emerges as the President, but assured that they (Management) would not compromised electoral process.
He said, “the Management of Akwa Ibom State College of Education takes no interest in whoever emerges the President of the students’ Union and other Exco members. Whosoever emerges, the management is willing and ready to work with such person. Also, what we owe the students is free, fair transparent and a democratic process”.
However Udo, explained that students Unionism is only an extra curricular activity that has nothing to do with job attainments after graduation.
He stressed, “the primary reason of being in school is academic pursuit, students union election is one of the extra curricular activities. What offers you job in the labour market is your certificate and degree not your level of involvement, and engagement in SUG election”.
Speaking further, the Provost reiterated, “I can stake my integrity, before you and and the management that the election will follow due process, I have involved myself in many elections, and the outcome has always been successful.”
He disclosed that, the reason for suspension of the election was for the best interest of students, as security operatives from the force headquarter directed that, one of the candidate Comr. Israel Nathaniel be screened out, pending when investigations are concluded.
Earlier, the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Ubong Silas while setting the tone for the day, hinted that the meeting was necessitated to help both students and management interface and dialogue on pressing issues bothering on the development and progress of the institution.
Dr. Silas sued for peace and support from the students body and assured that management on their part will put the necessary measures to ensure the election is conducted successfully.
Present at the Town Hall meeting were, Deputy Provost Administration, Dr. Edo Obot Ekanem, Deputy Provost Academics, Dr. Albert Archibong, Registrar, Barr. Augustine Udoibit, Dean of Students Affairs, Dr. Ubong Silas, Librarian, Dr. Michael Okon, Director of Medical Services, CSO, CSP Sam Ediette (rtd.) SUG President, Comrade Ubong Godwin and his Executive, Members of the Parliament, the Judiciary arm and the other students.
