AKSCOE One-day Advocacy and Sensitization Campaign on Social Vices to Tertiary Institutions

Ethical and Attitudinal Reorientation Commission (EARCOM) in collaboration with Akwa Ibom State Government Organized a one-day Advocacy and Sensitization Campaign on Social Vices to Tertiary Institutions in Akwa Ibom State.

Theme: FOCUS ON YOUR PURPOSE: ACADEMIC NOT VICES.

The epoch making occasion kick-started immediately when the management of EARCOM arrived the school environment.

The Chairman of EARCOM, Dr. Thompson thanked the almighty god for a wonderful day. She appreciated the effort of the provost of College of Education, Afaha Nsit and the management board for giving them the privilege to educate the students of the institution about the danger and menace of vices in tertiary institutions. ”Students should focus so that they can graduate with outstanding performance. Akwa Ibom State Government under the leadership of Gov. Udom Emmanuel has determined to achieve excellence from the educational sector in the state”, she said. Dr. Thompson emphasized that EARCOM has sixteen point responsibilities to achieve.

Dr. Daniel Udo, AG. Provost College of Education congratulated EARCOM for creating time to visit AKSCOE. ”Without the students, we the staff have been in this place, therefore the interest of the students is sacrosanct”, he also urged the students to stay calm and get the necessary information from the resource intellectuals.

The keynote address presenter, Prof. Isong Solomon explained that students must focus on what brought them to school so that they will receive their purpose in life. ”As a student, you must be useful to yourself and to the society at large”. There are so many vices in the institution that can jeopardize or thwart the future of students. Example drug abuse, smoking, peer group, examination malpractice, indecent dressing, prostitution, bad friends/companies, stealing and cultism.

“The moral decadence in the society have brought abject squalor to our polity”. Com. Peters of the Nigerian Civil Defence said that their duty is to maintain peace and secure lives but it is quite unfortunate that most of the arrested persons are Nigerian Students
.
Prof. Effiong Johnson, a renowned poet and writer emphasized on how students have mis-used their mobile phones.”65% of Nigerian students spent 65% of their time daily on phones”. He said that success is a product of smart work.

Dsp. Uzoama Nwachukwu commended the students of AKSCOE for not being among the arrested suspects in their police custody. Elder.Isaac Michael advised the students to make a comparative analysis before taking any decision. He also said that none of the vices have never given any reputable certificate to its members nor celebrate them.

Dr. Charles Udo, Hon. Commissioner of Information and Strategy Akwa Ibom State said that the Government of Akwa Ibom state will not take it kindly with any student who will be identified as a cult member because the Governor of Akwa Ibom State has declared zero tolerance for cultism in the state.
