A BRIEF SUMMARY OF ACTIVITIES OF THE SCHOOL OF SCIENCE

INTRODUCTION   

ESU DEANSchool of Science, College of Education, Afaha Nsit is the pioneer school that was started at the inception of the College in January 1991. Mr. Emmanuel J. Essien was appointed as the pioneer Dean of the School. The School was established with the primary purpose of producing science and technology teachers for the secondary school system of the state. The School started with five academic departments for the award of Nigeria Certificate in Education [NCE]. The departments were Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, and Integrated Science. The progress in the school led to the introduction of Computer Science and Physical and Health Education departments in 1996. It was the school with the largest number of students and lecturers.      A good number of academic staff in the various Departments of School of Science are undergoing further studies under Tet-fund Sponsorship. The school is administered by a Dean who is responsible for the academic and administrative running of the school. In addition,   the School is also running an affiliate programme of the Faculty of Education, University of Uyo, under the Directorate of Degree Programme of the College, where Seventy two (72) students were matriculated as First batch (pioneer) students in the School of Science.

DUTIES PERFORMED BY THE DEAN IN THE SCHOOL OF SCIENCE:

The School of Science is mandated to perform the following duties:

  1. As the Chief Examiner of the School the Dean is responsible to the Provost;
  2. Coordinate all academic activities within the seven (7) departments of the School;
  3. Exercise proper control of staff and students within the seven (7) departments of the School;
  4. Hold regular meetings at the School Board level, where matters of academic interest are discussed;
  5. Hold regular conferences and also published journal articles written by lecturers;
  6. Ensure that examination results are scrutinized during the school board meetings, before presentation during an Academic Board Meetings;
  7. Carried out regular sports activities within the School;
  8. Conduct evaluation of annual performance of Heads of Department and other staff of the School;
  9. The Dean of school is committed to attend Committee of Deans and Academic Board meetings;

The School of Science is presently running two [2] programmes namely:

  1. NCE- programme supervised by the National Commission for Colleges of Education [NCCE]
  2. The Degree programme [B.Sc. [Ed.] supervised by the National Universities Commission [NUC].

BACHELOR DEGREE PROGRAMME SUPERVISED BY THE DIRECTORATE OF DEGREE PROGRAMME OF THE COLLEGE

The degree programme is an affiliate of Faculty of Education, University of Uyo, where five [5] full time programmes were approved by NUC Resource Verification Team in September 2018 with the following courses:

  • Sc. [Ed.] in Biology Education
  • Sc. [Ed.] in Chemistry Education
  • Sc. [Ed.] in Physics Education
  • Sc. [Ed.] in Integrated Science Education
  • Sc. [Ed.] in Mathematics Education

ACCREDITATION EXERCISE BY NCCE

During the last accreditation exercises, Seven (7) Departments in the School of Science were presented for accreditation, but only four (4) Departments: (Physics, Chemistry, Integrated Science and Computer Science had full accreditation, while three departments: (Biology, Physical and Health Education and Mathematics) had interim accreditation. We therefore appeal to the management to address the deficiencies in the affected Departments through proper funding.

CURRENT COMMITTEES SET-UP IN THE SCHOOL OF SCIENCE

To ensure the smooth running of School of Science various Committees were Set-up Including:

  • School of Science Research and Publication Committee.
  • School of Science 6th Annual Conference Committee.
  • School of Science Student Project Committee.
  • School of Science Results Consideration Committee.
  • Committee for Production and Publication of 2019 NAJOSTECH (National Journal of Science and Technology) in School of Science.
  • School of Science Lecture Module Committee.
  • School of Science Practical Manual/Workbook Committee etc.

RELEASE OF 2018 ANNUAL PROMOTION

The Dean School of Science, Dr. Samuel R. Osu of the Department of Biology was promoted to the Rank of a Chief Lecturer, other Academic staffs of the School of Science promoted were:

  • Juliana J. Isang-Thomas (Dept. of Computer Sc.) – Principal Lecturer;
  • (Mrs.) Arit Uyouko (Dept. of Computer Sc.) – Senior Lecturer;

  • Imaikop Okon Akpan (Dept. of Computer Sc.) – Principal Lecturer.

28TH MATRICULATION CEREMONY

A total of 158 students matriculated into the School of Science under NCCE Programme, while a total number of 72 students matriculated under NUC Programme for the award First Degree.

THE 7TH COMBINED CONVOCATION CEREMONY

The 7th Combined Convocation covers the following set of graduands in School of Science. 2014/2015, 2015/2016 and 2016/2017.
